Bubble column photobioreactor for Chlorella pyrenoidosa cultivation and validating gas hold up and volumetric mass transfer coefficient

M. Mubarak et al.

Summary: This study designed and fabricated a 20 L bubble column photobioreactor for the cultivation of Chlorella pyrenoidosa. The results showed that the experimental and theoretically predicted gas hold up and volumetric mass transfer coefficient had similar trends at different gas velocities. Comparatively, the biomass concentration and lipid content of C. pyrenoidosa cultivated in the bubble column photobioreactor were higher than those in conical flask and glass tank cultivation.

Marine cyanobacteria tune energy transfer efficiency in their light-harvesting antennae by modifying pigment coupling

Yuval Kolodny et al.

Summary: The marine cyanobacteria Synechococcus has a unique photo-acclimation strategy to adapt to different light conditions by adjusting the size and structure of their phycobilisomes under low light. Enhanced energetic coupling between antenna rods' pigments leads to more efficient energy transfer compared to standard FRET processes, indicating that coupling control plays a key role in photosynthetic antenna acclimation to varying light conditions.
