High-Performance Near-Infrared Aggregation-Induced Emission Luminogen with Mitophagy Regulating Capability for Multimodal Cancer Theranostics

Yue Li et al.

Summary: An NIR fluorophore TACQ with aggregation-induced emission activity was developed for mitochondrial targeting multimodal cancer theranostics. The TACQ exhibited bright NIR emission, high photothermal conversion efficiency, and efficient generation of reactive oxygen species, making it an efficient theranostic agent for NIR fluorescence and photothermal imaging-guided synergistic chemo-photothermal and photodynamic therapy.

Enhanced photodynamic therapy for overcoming tumor hypoxia: From microenvironment regulation to photosensitizer innovation

Jianjun Du et al.

Summary: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a non-invasive therapy that has attracted increasing interest for treating tumors, but the lack of oxygen in solid tumors limits its effectiveness. The reconstruction of the tumor microenvironment and development of anti-hypoxia photosensitizers are important research topics for improving the efficacy of PDT.

Mitochondria Targeted O2 Economizer to Alleviate Tumor Hypoxia for Enhanced Photodynamic Therapy

Ping Yuan et al.

Summary: In this study, a mitochondria targeted O-2 economizer (Mito-OxE) was developed to improve the efficiency of photodynamic therapy by alleviating tumor hypoxia and enhancing the subcellular localization of photosensitizers. The targeted drug delivery system shows promising results in enhancing PDT efficacy against hypoxic tumors.

Recent Advancements in Nanomedicine for 'Cold' Tumor Immunotherapy

Qinjun Chen et al.

Summary: Despite the high clinical success rate of current anticancer immunotherapies using immune check-point inhibitors (ICIs), many patients with 'cold' tumors still respond poorly to ICI therapy due to insufficient T cell infiltration and low immunogenicity. Advances in precision medicine and nanotechnology have shown promise in improving treatment for these patients by targeting the immunosuppressive tumor immune microenvironment in cold tumors.

Expanding the Limits of Photodynamic Therapy: The Design of Organelles and Hypoxia-Targeting Nanomaterials for Enhanced Photokilling of Cancer

Italo Rodrigo Calori et al.

Summary: Photodynamic therapy is a minimally invasive clinical protocol used for cancer treatment by generating reactive oxygen species to destroy tumors. Challenges such as hypoxia in solid tumors and limited light energy reaching the target hinder therapy advancement. Functional nanoparticles carrying oxygen-supplying photosensitizers and targeting specific organelles have shown improved outcomes in vitro and in vivo.

Recent advances of AIE light-up probes for photodynamic therapy

Shanshan Liu et al.

Summary: As a new non-invasive treatment method, photodynamic therapy (PDT) has attracted attention in biomedical applications due to the advantages of possessing fluorescence for photosensitizers. The unique features of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) fluorogens provide new opportunities for facile design of light-up probes with high signal-to-noise ratios and improved theranostic accuracy and efficacy for image-guided PDT. The review summarizes recent advances of AIE light-up probes for PDT, introducing strategies and principles for designing AIE photosensitizers and light-up probes and elaborating on their applications in photodynamic antitumor and antibacterial applications.

Engineering a photosensitizer nanoplatform for amplified photodynamic immunotherapy via tumor microenvironment modulation

Yaxin Zhou et al.

Summary: The engineered photosensitizer nanoplatform integrates chlorin e6, axitinib, and dextro-1-methyl tryptophan to enhance the efficacy of photodynamic immunotherapy by modulating the tumor microenvironment. This approach improves PDT and immunotherapy effects by normalizing tumor blood vessels and inhibiting IDO activity.
