Light-based 3D bioprinting of bone tissue scaffolds with tunable mechanical properties and architecture from photocurable silk fibroin

Monika Rajput et al.

Summary: Three-dimensional bioprinting based on digital light processing (DLP) provides opportunities for mimicking human tissues. However, the limited availability of biocompatible and biodegradable bioinks hinders progress in this field. This study presents a silk fibroin-derived bioink for DLP bioprinting, which exhibits bone-like viscoelastic behavior and favorable degradation. The bioink supports cell proliferation and osteogenesis. This work highlights the importance of silk fibroin-derived bioinks in tissue engineering.

High throughput direct 3D bioprinting in multiwell plates

Henry H. Hwang et al.

Summary: The study introduces an integrated 3D bioprinting platform based on microscale continuous optical printing technology, capable of high throughput fabrication of complex 3D biomedical samples in multiwell plate formats. The platform was used to showcase constructs with varying spatial geometries, tunable mechanical properties, and reproducibility, as well as in situ fabrication of live hepatocellular carcinoma 3D tissue scaffolds and dual-tissue fabrication with different cell types. This advancement enables rapid generation of in vitro 3D tissue models for high throughput preclinical drug screening and disease modeling.

Engineering a Chemically Defined Hydrogel Bioink for Direct Bioprinting of Microvasculature

Ryan W. Barrs et al.

Summary: This study develops a peptide-functionalized alginate hydrogel bioink with defined mechanical, rheological, and biochemical properties for direct bioprinting of microvascularized tissues. The bioink synergistically promotes vascular morphogenesis and capillary-scale endothelial tube formation by conjugating an integrin-binding peptide and a vascular endothelial growth factor-mimetic peptide with a protease-sensitive linker onto a biodegradable alginate. The resulting vascularized tissue construct exhibits pericyte-endothelial cell colocalization, angiogenic sprouting, and deposition of fibronectin and collagen in vascular and tissue components.

Mechanism of Mechanical Training-Induced Self-Reinforced Viscoelastic Behavior of Highly Hydrated Silk Materials

Zhuochen Lv et al.

Summary: Mechanical training of silk materials leads to the rapid formation of a molecular cross-linking network, enhancing the mechanical properties. The study categorizes the structural evaluation of silk proteins during mechanical training into three stages and establishes a five-parameter viscoelastic model to understand the structure-property relationship. This research provides insights into the design of soft silk functional materials.

Surface Tuning of Wood via Covalent Modification of Its Lignocellulosic Biopolymers with Substituted Benzoates-A Study on Reactivity, Efficiency, and Durability

Martin Soeftje et al.

Summary: Chemical modification of wood using benzotriazolyl-activated carboxylic acids has been proven to be an effective method for functionalizing lignocellulosic biopolymers. Through synthesizing and applying different benzamide derivatives, a significant correlation between modification efficiency and theoretical reactivity constants of aromatic substitution patterns was observed. The successful covalent attachment of benzamide derivatives was confirmed by spectroscopy, demonstrating the stability of the newly formed ester bond.
