Fast production of large, time-calibrated, informal supertrees with tree.merger

Silvia Castiglione et al.

Summary: This article introduces a new interactive software for the fast production of large, time-calibrated informal supertrees, which allows the merging of different phylogenetic information from various sources. The software automatically implements time calibration and has been applied to two case studies with efficient results.

Testing the occurrence of convergence in the craniomandibular shape evolution of living carnivorans

Davide Tamagnini et al.

Summary: The study found that convergent evolution exists in ecologically equivalent carnivorans in some cases, but is a rare phenomenon in dietary categories. This is likely due to the complex interplay between ecology, biomechanics, and morphology.

A method for mapping morphological convergence on three-dimensional digital models: the case of the mammalian sabre-tooth

Marina Melchionna et al.

Summary: A new method (conv.map) for visualizing and quantifying patterns of morphological convergence on three-dimensional models is introduced in this study. Stronger morphological convergence was found among sabre-tooths from different mammalian clades, particularly in the rostral and posterior parts of the cranium. This suggests a similarity in function, likely related to hunting relatively large prey using a stabbing bite.
