Glyphosate Toxicity to Native Nontarget Macrophytes Following Three Different Routes of Incidental Exposure

Verena Sesin et al.

Summary: The study assessed the impact of glyphosate, commonly used in invasive plant management, on two endangered macrophytes. Results showed that even low concentrations of glyphosate spray reduced macrophyte growth, while immersion and rhizosphere contact did not affect the plants.

Title: Low concentrations of glyphosate in water and sediment after direct over-water application to control an invasive aquatic plant

C. D. Robichaud et al.

Summary: The Ontario government carried out the first large-scale over-water application of glyphosate to control the invasive European Phragmites australis in Canadian history. Concentrations of glyphosate in water reached a maximum of 0.320 mg/L within 24 hours of application, while concentrations returned to pre-treatment levels within one year. The herbicide did not reach levels of toxicological concern for aquatic biota according to the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment.

Widespread agrochemicals differentially affect zooplankton biomass and community structure

Marie-Pier Hebert et al.

Summary: Anthropogenic environmental changes are deteriorating freshwater habitats at unprecedented rates. Synthetic chemical pollution, including agrochemicals such as pesticides, have received relatively little attention in freshwater community and ecosystem ecology despite increasing more rapidly than many other agents of global change. Research on the effects of multiple agrochemicals on complex biological systems requires the integration of ecology and ecotoxicology across fields.

Variation in glyphosate effects and accumulation in emergent macrophytes

Verena Sesin et al.

Summary: Invasive aquatic plants can disrupt native biodiversity with considerable ecological impacts. Glyphosate-based herbicides provide an effective option to manage invasive macrophytes, with the most invasive plant, Phragmites australis, showing significantly higher sensitivity to glyphosate compared to native and other invasive plants. Additionally, after 27 days, Phragmites australis retained more glyphosate than native and other invasive plants, indicating potential environmental concerns about glyphosate accumulation in macrophytes.

Allelopathy is pervasive in invasive plants

Susan Kalisz et al.

Summary: The majority of invasive plant species produce allelochemicals that can negatively affect native plant performance and allelopathy is widespread across the plant phylogeny, warranting more attention as invasion rates increase across the globe.
