Estimates of Domestic Cats in Urban Areas Using Interdisciplinary Science: The Washington DC Cat Count

D. T. Tyler Flockhart et al.

Summary: Accurate information about the number of cats living outdoors and how they respond to different kinds of management is crucial for resolving debates about outdoor cat policy. The DC Cat Count project aims to develop tools and methods to quantify the cat population in the District of Columbia and identify effective interventions using the best scientific practices. This approach has the potential to improve outcomes for both cats and wildlife.

Provision of High Meat Content Food and Object Play Reduce Predation of Wild Animals by Domestic Cats Felis catus

Martina Cecchetti et al.

Summary: Non-invasive, positive contributions to cat nutrition and behavior can reduce their tendency to hunt, rather than impede their hunting. Measures such as providing high meat protein, grain-free food and engaging in daily object play have shown to decrease animals captured by cats. However, the introduction of puzzle feeders increased the number of animals captured. Birdsbessafe collar covers were effective in reducing bird predation, but cat bells had no discernible effect. Owners who are concerned about welfare implications of other interventions may find support in these non-invasive methods.
