Optimization of mass rearing of Aphidius matricariae on tritrophic plant-aphid-parasitoid systems

This study investigated the suitability of six host plant-aphid systems for mass rearing of Aphidius matricariae and found that one aphid species on tobacco was the most suitable, but other aphids also showed potential. This is significant for the development of large-scale rearing methods for A. matricariae and biological control programs.
To determine the most suitable rearing system for use in mass rearing programs of Aphidius matricariae (Haliday) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), six host plant-aphid systems were selected, including Aphis gossypii Glover on cucumber, squash, and common bean, Myzus persicae nicotianae Blackman on tobacco, Myzus persicae (Sulzur) on Chinese cabbage, and Aphis fabae Scopoli on common bean. The life history and demographic parameters of the four aphid species on their host plants and those of the parasitoid reared on each of the six plant-aphid systems were investigated under controlled environmental conditions (25 +/- 1 degrees C, 70 +/- 5% RH and L:D 16:8 h). In terms of the resultant net reproduction rate of the parasitoid, M. persicae reared on Chinese cabbage was the most suitable. However, other life history parameters, such as reproductive period, adult longevity, daily and total fecundity and survivorship, were higher on M. persicae nicotianae on tobacco, which suggests that this system may be the most suitable. These findings will be useful in developing an appropriate production method for mass rearing A. matricariae for augmentative biological control programs.
