Iron-based biochar derived from waste-activated sludge enhances anaerobic digestion of synthetic salty organic wastewater for methane production

Linxuan Che et al.

Summary: The synthetic iron-based biochar improved methane production at lower NaCl concentrations, but failed to have a catalytic effect at higher NaCl concentrations due to complete suppression of methanogenesis. Iron-based biochar demonstrated potential benefits for enhanced anaerobic digestion and treatment of salty organic wastewater by promoting hydrolysis-acidification and methanogenesis at lower salt concentrations.

Enhanced direct interspecies electron transfer with transition metal oxide accelerants in anaerobic digestion

Sining Yun et al.

Summary: Transition metal oxide accelerants were investigated in enhanced anaerobic digestion systems, showing improved biogas production, COD degradation rate, and solid reduction rates compared to control groups. These accelerants demonstrated superior electron transfer capacities and microbial consortia development in the DIET mechanism, providing a promising strategy for high-performance accelerants in AD systems.

Rapid initiation of methanogenesis in the anaerobic digestion of food waste by acclimatizing sludge with sulfidated nanoscale zerovalent iron

Dejin Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that the addition of S-nZVI improves methane production and VFAs transformation during the acclimatization phase, and enhances the electron transfer capacity of the microbial community. In the evaluation phase, the acclimatized sludge still maintains strong methanogenic ability, but the microbial community changes under the stress of food waste.

Effects of low- and high-temperature thermal-alkaline pretreatments on anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge

Tianlong Zheng et al.

Summary: The effects of low- and high-temperature thermal-alkaline pretreatments on anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge were compared in laboratory experiments. Both pretreatments increased methane yield and sludge reduction, with high-temperature pretreatment showing a lower energy efficiency compared to low-temperature pretreatment.

Deeper insights into effect of activated carbon and nano-zero-valent iron addition on acidogenesis and whole anaerobic digestion

Ruming Wang et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the effects of activated carbon (AC) and nano-zero-valent iron (nZVI) on anaerobic digestion, finding that they increased acidogenesis and overall methane yield, respectively. Mechanism exploration showed that AC enriched specific bacteria to improve acid production, while nZVI buffered pH and enriched specific bacteria to utilize H2 and formic acid.

Effects of bentonite on antibiotic resistance genes in biogas slurry and residue from thermophilic and mesophilic anaerobic digestion of food waste

Pan Wang et al.

Summary: This study found that adding bentonite during anaerobic digestion of food waste can increase methane production and effectively reduce the abundance of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in biogas residue. Bentonite and temperature were identified as major factors influencing the abundance of ARGs.

The evolution of bacterial community structure and function in microalgal-bacterial consortia with inorganic nitrogen fluctuations in piggery digestate

Min Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the evolution of bacterial community under inorganic nitrogen fluctuations in treating piggery digestate using a continuous photobioreactor. The optimal removal rate of total inorganic nitrogen was found to be 45.62 mg-N L-1 d-1 when introducing specific concentrations of ammonium and nitrate. High throughput sequencing revealed a shift in dominant community members for nitrogen removal from prokaryotic algae to nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria.

Accelerating anaerobic digestion for methane production: Potential role of direct interspecies electron transfer

Zixin Wang et al.

Summary: Anaerobic digestion is a commercial technology used for producing bioenergy from waste, but suffers from inefficiencies. Direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) is seen as a potential solution to enhance the process, as it allows for faster and more stable transport of reducing equivalents between bacteria and archaea. This review paper discusses different mechanisms of DIET, its role during organic degradation, startup performance, methane production, and potential industrial applications.
