The orexin (hypocretin) neuropeptide system is a target for novel therapeutics to treat cocaine use disorder with alcohol coabuse

Morgan H. James et al.

Summary: It is estimated that 50-90% of individuals with cocaine use disorder also use alcohol, partly to self-medicate against negative emotional effects. Pharmaceutical strategies targeting the orexin neuropeptide system could potentially reduce motivation for cocaine and alcohol use, as well as anxiety. Research focusing on orexin receptor antagonists for reducing behaviors related to cocaine, alcohol, and stress shows promise, but more studies accounting for concurrent substance use patterns are needed for clinical viability.

Distribution and ultrastructural localization of the glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP-1R) in the rat brain

Erzsebet Farkas et al.

Summary: GLP-1R protein is mainly distributed in circumventricular organs and neighboring regions such as the arcuate nucleus and nucleus tractus solitarii in the rat brain. Additionally, GLP-1R protein is also present in various areas of the telencephalon, diencephalon, brainstem, and cerebellum. Ultrastructural examination reveals that GLP-1R immunoreactivity is associated with the membrane of perikarya and dendrites, and can also be found inside and on the surface of axon varicosities and terminals.

A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Finds Increased Blood Levels of All Forms of Ghrelin in Both Restricting and Binge-Eating/Purging Subtypes of Anorexia Nervosa

Maria Seidel et al.

Summary: Studies on ghrelin levels in anorexia nervosa patients found that all forms of ghrelin increase in the acute stage, with a significant decrease in total ghrelin observed pre-treatment to follow-up. However, total ghrelin levels remain marginally elevated at follow-up, while no treatment effect was observed for acyl ghrelin.
