Summary: The Coefficient of Haze (CoH) was used as a proxy for particulate matter concentration in the US since around 1950. Research found it can be converted to Elemental Carbon (EC) using the European Black Smoke (BS) technique and historic and current measurement techniques for Black Carbon (BC) and EC. The initially claimed linear relation between CoH and sample load is actually strongly nonlinear, leading to severe underestimations of historic EC concentrations on high EC concentration days.
