Chronic Exposure to HIV-Derived Protein Tat Impairs Endothelial Function via Indirect Alteration in Fat Mass and Nox1-Mediated Mechanisms in Mice

Laszlo Kovacs et al.

Summary: Individuals living with HIV have an increased risk for atherosclerosis-related cardiovascular disease, with the mechanism of HIV-associated vascular pathogenesis not fully understood. This study found that HIV-regulatory protein Tat may mediate HIV-induced endothelial dysfunction through Nox1-dependent mechanisms. Treatments with Tat resulted in decreased body weight, fat mass, and leptin levels, along with increased expression of Nox1 and NoxA1, leading to impaired endothelial function. The findings suggest potential targets such as the Nox1 and leptin system to improve vascular function in HIV infection-related CVD.
