Galaxy morphologies revealed with Subaru HSC and super-resolution techniques. I. Major merger fractions of LUV ∼ 3-15 LUV* dropout galaxies at z ∼ 4-7

Takatoshi Shibuya et al.

Summary: We performed a super-resolution analysis of Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) images and estimated the major merger fractions of z similar to 4-7 dropout galaxies at the bright end of galaxy UV luminosity functions (LFs). The major merger fractions were found to be around 10%-20% at z similar to 4 and 50%-70% at z similar to 5-7.

The rapid transition from star formation to AGN-dominated rest-frame ultraviolet light at z ≃ 4

R. A. A. Bowler et al.

Summary: With the development of deep optical-to-near-infrared extragalactic imaging, a study was conducted to investigate the transition between SF- and AGN-dominated systems at z similar to 4 in the rest-frame UV. The results showed a rapid transition to AGN-dominated sources around M-UV similar to -23.2, and the rest-frame UV morphology, size-luminosity relation, and available spectra were analyzed to derive the rest-frame UV luminosity function for the SF- and AGN-dominated subsamples. Additionally, a simple model was used to predict the rest-frame AGN LF from the z = 4 galaxy LF, revealing the increasing impact of host galaxy light on the measured morphology of faint AGN.

MMT spectroscopy of Lyman-alpha at z ≃ 7: evidence for accelerated reionization around massive galaxies

Ryan Endsley et al.

Summary: Recent observations have shown strong Lyα emission in some of the most massive z = 7-9 galaxies, which is likely due to their enhanced ionizing photon production efficiency resulting from high specific star formation rates. Additionally, there is evidence to suggest that Lyα transmission declines less rapidly in massive galaxies compared to low-mass lensed systems in the redshift range of 6 < z < 7, implying that massive z ≈ 7 galaxies often reside in large ionized regions.

Pure Density Evolution of the Ultraviolet Quasar Luminosity Function at 2 ≲ z ≲ 6

Yongjung Kim et al.

Summary: Research indicates that the observed evolution of UV QLF at high redshift can be explained by a pure density evolution model, suggesting that the QLF evolution at high redshift can be understood within the framework of halo mass function evolution. The model also reveals the existence of a hidden population of faint AGNs.

New Determinations of the UV Luminosity Functions from z ∼ 9 to 2 Show a Remarkable Consistency with Halo Growth and a Constant Star Formation Efficiency

R. J. Bouwens et al.

Summary: This study provides the most comprehensive determinations of the galaxy's rest-frame UV luminosity function (LF) at z similar to 2-9 using the Hubble Space Telescope. The results show a smooth evolution trend in the UV LF from z similar to 10 to z similar to 2, indicating variations in the faint-end slope, characteristic luminosity, and normalization of the LF. These trends can be explained by the evolution of the halo mass function and a simple constant star formation efficiency model.

Summary: Results of cross-correlation Ly alpha intensity mapping with Subaru/Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) ultra-deep narrowband images and Ly alpha emitters (LAEs) at z = 5.7 and 6.6 show the presence of potential Ly alpha emission from physically uncorrelated signals and sources.

The UV-brightest Lyman continuum emitting star-forming galaxy

R. Marques-Chaves et al.

Summary: We report the discovery of J0121+0025, an extremely luminous and young star-forming galaxy at redshift z = 3.244, showing significant Lyman continuum leakage. The high signal-to-noise ratio UV spectroscopy reveals young age starburst features, with strong emission and absorption lines indicative of a starburst age of less than 10 million years. The findings suggest that a significant fraction of Lyman continuum photons can escape from sources with various UV luminosities, shedding light on the role of luminous starbursts in cosmic reionization.
