Dust Settling and Clumping in MRI-turbulent Outer Protoplanetary Disks

Ziyan Xu et al.

Summary: Planetesimal formation in protoplanetary disks is thought to be driven by the streaming instability, but recent studies suggest that external turbulence, particularly the magneto-rotational instability (MRI), can damp or suppress the streaming instability. This study uses high-resolution simulations to demonstrate that dust clumping is actually easier in the presence of MRI turbulence, due to dust backreaction and the formation of local pressure maxima. These findings suggest that planetesimal formation is likely to occur in the outer regions of protoplanetary disks, especially in ring-like substructures.

The stress-pressure lag in MRI turbulence and its implications for thermal instability in accretion discs

Loren E. Held et al.

Summary: The study reveals through numerical simulations that turbulent stress oscillations can lag behind pressure oscillations by approximately 5 orbits in certain cases, with implications for understanding thermal and viscous overstability in discs around compact objects.

What really makes an accretion disc MAD

Mitchell C. Begelman et al.

Summary: Magnetically arrested accretion discs (MADs) are a magnetic phenomenon around black holes that can generate powerful jets and explain observations of black hole environments. We propose a new theoretical model that suggests it is mainly a toroidal field that defines and regulates the properties of MADs. We confirm the plausibility of our model through simulations and suggest criteria to distinguish MADs from other accretion states.

Onset of Plasmoid Reconnection during Magnetorotational Instability

Jarrett Rosenberg et al.

Summary: This study examines the evolution of current sheets in accretion flows undergoing magnetorotational instability through numerical modeling in global cylindrical geometry. It is found that in both 2D and 3D, current sheets attract each other and merge when axisymmetric modes dominate, driving magnetic reconnection, whereas at high Lundquist numbers the current sheets become thin and subject to plasmoid instability. When nonaxisymmetric 3D modes dominate, turbulence makes the current sheets more unstable and stretch vertically.

General relativistic MHD simulations of non-thermal flaring in Sagittarius A*

K. Chatterjee et al.

Summary: This study investigates the flare flux distributions of Sgr A* using GPU-accelerated codes, considering the effect of particle acceleration for the first time. The results suggest that non-thermal populations of electrons arising from turbulence-driven reconnection in weakly magnetized accretion flows lead to moderate NIR and X-ray flares, while fulfilling multiwavelength flux constraints.
