The KLEVER survey: nitrogen abundances at z ∼ 2 and probing the existence of a fundamental nitrogen relation

Connor Hayden-Pawson et al.

Summary: The study compared the nitrogen-to-oxygen ratio (N/O) in high-redshift galaxies with local galaxies and found that high-redshift galaxies show mild enrichment in N/O at a given gas-phase metallicity, but significant depletion when compared at a fixed stellar mass. The study also discovered a strong anticorrelation between N/O and SFR in local galaxies, similar to the relationship between O/H and SFR in the mass-metallicity relation. Additionally, the existence of a fundamental nitrogen relation suggests that mechanisms governing the fundamental metallicity relation must be probed by not only O/H, but also N/O, indicating that factors such as galaxy age and star formation efficiency play important roles.

SDSS-IV MaNGA: galaxy gas-phase metallicity gradients vary across the mass-size plane

N. F. Boardman et al.

Summary: Gas-phase abundance gradients in galaxies have been found to vary systematically with galaxy size and mass, with smaller galaxies displaying flatter gradients than larger galaxies at a given stellar mass above 10^10 solar masses. This mass-size behavior cannot be explained by instrumental effects, and is not simply a reflection of known trends between gradients and morphology. Further investigation is needed to establish a firm physical interpretation for this pattern.

Gas-phase Metallicity as a Diagnostic of the Drivers of Star Formation on Different Spatial Scales

Enci Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that on galactic scales, SFR and gas metallicity are negatively correlated, while on scales within galaxies of about 100 pc, they are positively correlated. The variations in SFR are mainly driven by time-varying inflow at galactic scales, revealing the physical processes of star formation at different scales.

Extreme emission-line galaxies in SDSS - I. Empirical and model-based calibrations of chemical abundances

E. Perez-Montero et al.

Summary: Local extreme emission-line galaxies were studied to derive chemical abundances, comparing their properties with high-redshift galaxies. New strong-line methods were calibrated and photoionization models evaluated for chemical analysis of actively star-forming galaxies in early stages of evolution. HII-CHI-MISTRY code was adapted for these galaxies to derive oxygen and nitrogen abundances consistently with direct method.

FROM GLOBAL TO SPATIALLY RESOLVED IN LOW-REDSHIFT GALAXIES

S. F. Sanchez et al.

Summary: Our understanding of the structure, composition, and evolution of galaxies has greatly improved in recent decades, mainly due to new results from large spectroscopic and imaging surveys. The nature of ionized gas, its relation with stellar properties and chemical composition, scaling relations between stars and gas, and evolution patterns have been extensively explored and described. The introduction of additional techniques, particularly integral field spectroscopy, has led to a re-interpretation of recent results from a spatially resolved perspective.

Detection of metallicity correlations in 100 nearby galaxies

Zefeng Li et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the 2D gas-phase oxygen abundance distributions of 100 nearby galaxies and computes the related correlation functions. The study finds higher-than-expected correlations in the majority of targets, with characteristic correlation lengths and relationships with stellar mass and star formation rate. Results suggest that 2D metallicity correlation functions can be a powerful tool for studying galaxy evolution.

Summary: The Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA) program has observed 9269 galaxies in the low redshift universe with integral-field spectroscopy from 2014 to 2020. A major revision of the MaNGA data pipeline architecture has been presented, demonstrating that the revised pipeline measures the instrumental LSF accurately, allowing reliable measurements of astrophysical velocity dispersions.
