EMPRESS. IV. Extremely Metal-poor Galaxies Including Very Low-mass Primordial Systems with M*=104-105 M⊙ and 2%-3% (O/H): High (Fe/O) Suggestive of Metal Enrichment by Hypernovae/Pair-instability Supernovae

Yuki Isobe et al.

Summary: This study conducted Keck/LRIS follow-up spectroscopy for 13 photometric candidates of extremely metal-poor galaxies, confirming that two EMPGs with the lowest oxygen ratios show high iron ratios close to solar abundance. The inclusion of bright hypernovae and/or pair-instability supernovae in metal-poor environments could explain the characteristics of these galaxies.

No strong dependence of Lyman continuum leakage on physical properties of star-forming galaxies at ≲ z ≲ 3.5

A. Saxena et al.

Summary: In this study, Lyman continuum (LyC) radiation escape fraction (f(esc)) measurements were conducted for a set of star-forming galaxies at redshift 3.11 < z < 3.53. The results involved the identification of 11 new candidate LyC leakers and the discovery of correlations between f(esc) and certain galaxy properties, which could have implications for reionization models.

New insights on the nebular emission, ionizing radiation, and low metallicity of Green Peas from advanced modelling

V Fernandez et al.

Summary: This work uses deep optical spectra and advanced methods to study the stellar populations and gas properties of three Green Pea galaxies. The study finds a red excess in the light distribution of the stellar populations, indicating an incomplete characterization of the gas luminosity. By fitting emission spectra, it is determined that the gas has a low-metallicity and is ionized by strong radiation fields. A neural networks sampler is also proposed to constrain the parameters of photoionization models.

Characterizing Extreme Emission-line Galaxies. I. A Four-zone Ionization Model for Very High-ionization Emission*

Danielle A. Berg et al.

Summary: Stellar population models predict ionization of oxygen up to O+2, while some extreme emission-line galaxies exhibit much higher ionization potentials. A four-zone ionization model has been proposed to explain the high-ionization emission lines in EELGs, revealing steeper central ionization gradients and higher ionization parameters compared to traditional models. Additionally, a model-independent dichotomy in abundance patterns suggests alpha/Fe enrichment in EELGs, but there remains a challenge in reproducing the observed high-ionization emission lines.

Predicting the observability of population III stars with ELT-HARMONI via the helium 1640Å emission line

Kearn Grisdale et al.

Summary: Research suggests that Population III stars can be detected using advanced technology, and Pop. III stars with a top heavy initial mass function are more likely to be detected under specific conditions. Additionally, it is possible to observe the HeII lambda 1640 line for galaxies with larger Pop. III stellar masses, even if their initial mass function is similar to that of Pop. I stars.

Large binocular telescope observations of new six compact star-forming galaxies with [Ne v] λ3426 Å emission

Y. I. Izotov et al.

Summary: The compact star-forming galaxies reported in this study exhibit characteristics of young starburst ages and high ionization radiation, with most being low-metallicity objects. Their spectra show features such as Wolf-Rayet lines, indicating that stellar ionization radiation alone is not sufficient to produce such strong emission. Models suggest non-uniform density distributions in these galaxies, with different lines emitted in channels of varying density.

Lyman continuum leakage from low-mass galaxies with M☆ < 108 M⊙

Y. I. Izotov et al.

Summary: Observations of nine low-mass star-forming galaxies show a tight anticorrelation between Lyman continuum (LyC) leakage and velocity separation V-sep, with V-sep remaining the best indicator of LyC leakage. Contrary to previous expectations, no increase of LyC escape fraction (f(esc)(LyC)) with decreasing galaxy stellar mass M-star was found in this study.

Can nebular He II emission be explained by ultra-luminous X-ray sources?

Charlotte Simmonds et al.

Summary: Our study suggests that high mass X-ray binaries and ultra-luminous X-ray sources may be responsible for the observed He II nebular emission in low-metallicity star-forming galaxies. However, the strengths of high and low ionisation lines depend strongly on the X-ray contribution and the assumed spectral energy distributions of the high energy sources, which are not well understood.

EMPRESS. III. Morphology, Stellar Population, and Dynamics of Extremely Metal-poor Galaxies (EMPGs): Are EMPGs Local Analogs of High-z Young Galaxies?

Yuki Isobe et al.

Summary: The study presents the morphology and stellar population of 27 extremely metal-poor galaxies at similar to z=0, indicating that they typically have very compact disk structures. Comparison with galaxies at z similar to 0 and z similar to 6 suggests that the majority of these galaxies have properties more similar to z similar to 0 star-forming galaxies, rather than high-z young galaxies. The dynamics of one pair of metal-poor galaxies and tail indicate a possible infall scenario for driving significant velocity differences.
