Interaction between Multiple Current Sheets and a Shock Wave: 2D Hybrid Kinetic Simulations

M. Nakanotani et al.

Summary: This study investigates the particle acceleration behind a shock wave in the heliosphere due to interactions between magnetic islands, suggesting that current sheets may be involved in the generation of magnetic islands. The simulations show the compression of current sheets by the shock wave, leading to a tearing instability and the formation of magnetic islands downstream. Energetic particles are efficiently produced during the development of the instability some distance downstream of the shock wave.

Pitch-Angle Anisotropy Controls Particle Acceleration and Cooling in Radiative Relativistic Plasma Turbulence

Luca Comisso et al.

Summary: This study shows that magnetically dominated turbulence in pair plasmas subject to strong synchrotron cooling can generate a nonthermal particle spectrum with a hard power-law range, and the particle spectrum becomes even harder over time. These findings have important implications for understanding nonthermal emission from high-energy astrophysical sources.

Current Sheets, Plasmoids and Flux Ropes in the Heliosphere Part II: Theoretical Aspects

O. Pezzi et al.

Summary: Our understanding of processes in the heliosphere began with reduced dimensionality models, but non-planar structures play a crucial role in explaining phenomena like particle acceleration and energy dissipation; This review focuses on the theoretical paradigms and differences between 2D and 3D views of current sheets, magnetic islands, and flux ropes; The complex nature of magnetic reconnection and particle acceleration in a turbulent environment is highlighted through numerical simulations and in-situ observations.

Current Sheets, Plasmoids and Flux Ropes in the Heliosphere Part I. 2-D or not 2-D? General and Observational Aspects

O. Khabarova et al.

Summary: Recent studies in the heliosphere have shifted the focus from a 2D perspective to a more comprehensive understanding of 3D processes, revealing previously unimaginable dynamics through simulations and observations. Current research is centered on exploring plasma structures and their observations in the heliosphere.

Dissipation measures in weakly collisional plasmas

O. Pezzi et al.

Summary: This study compares different measures used for characterizing energy dissipation and kinetic-scale conversion in weakly collisional plasmas through kinetic numerical simulations. The results show overall agreement in dissipation measures between particle-in-cell (PIC) and continuum reconnection simulations, with slight differences in details. Distribution function-based measures show a broader width compared to energy-based proxies, indicating that energy transfer occurs in wider regions.

Parker Solar Probe observations of helical structures as boundaries for energetic particles

F. Pecora et al.

Summary: Observational evidence shows that intensity variations of solar energetic particles are correlated with the presence of helical magnetic flux tubes and their boundaries. Energetic particles are either confined within or localized outside of helical flux tubes, indicating that the latter act as transport boundaries for particles.
