Spi-OPS: Spitzer and CHEOPS confirm the near-polar orbit of MASCARA-1 b and reveal a hint of dayside reflection

M. J. Hooton et al.

Summary: In this study, the light curves of the ultra-hot Jupiter MASCARA-1 b were analyzed using advanced modeling techniques. The true spin-orbit angle Psi was successfully determined, and the day-side and night-side temperatures, as well as albedo, of the planet were derived. The study emphasizes the importance of using priors based on Doppler tomography for accurate measurements.

The atmosphere of HD 209458b seen with ESPRESSO No detectable planetary absorptions at high resolution

N. Casasayas-Barris et al.

Summary: The study used high-resolution ESPRESSO spectrograph to observe two transits of the gas giant HD 209458b, finding features in the planetary transmission spectrum at wavelengths corresponding to strong absorption lines in the parent star. They did not detect any planetary absorption, including previously reported NaI, in the atmosphere of HD 209458b. The high signal-to-noise ratio in the transmission spectrum allows for comparisons of different one-dimensional stellar atmospheric models.

Visible-light Phase Curves from the Second Year of the TESS Primary Mission

Ian Wong et al.

Summary: A systematic study was conducted on full-orbit phase curves for known transiting systems in the northern ecliptic sky observed during the second year of the TESS primary mission. Secondary eclipses and atmospheric brightness modulations were observed in seven of the 15 transiting systems analyzed. Combining TESS and Spitzer measurements allowed for the calculation of dayside brightness temperatures, albedos, and phase integrals for several systems, providing insights into exoplanet clouds. Atmospheric retrieval of the full secondary eclipse spectrum for Kepler-13Ab revealed noninverted temperature-pressure profiles and significant absorption features, confirming previous findings on geometric albedo.

Gy M. Szabo et al.

Summary: The study analyzed three transits of AU Mic b and found a 7:4 resonance between the stellar rotational period and the planetary orbital period. The observation of star-spot patterns on the stellar surface supported this conclusion.

A CHEOPS white dwarf transit search

Brett M. Morris et al.

Summary: White dwarf spectroscopy reveals that metal pollution in white dwarf atmospheres can serve as markers for recent accretion of planetary material. The study used the CHEOPS satellite to search for planetesimals orbiting nearby white dwarfs, but did not detect significant variations in flux associated with transiting objects. The research highlights the sensitivity of the small survey to Moon-sized transiting objects with specific characteristics.

Closed-form ab initio solutions of geometric albedos and reflected light phase curves of exoplanets

Kevin Heng et al.

Summary: The study on the albedos of planets and moons in the Solar System has a long history, with a particular focus on the relationship between geometric albedo and spherical albedo. The discovery of closed-form solutions for geometric albedo and integral phase function that apply to specific reflection laws allows for the retrieval of globally averaged physical parameters efficiently. These innovations enable fully Bayesian phase-curve inversions for reflectance maps and simultaneous light-curve detrending.
