Transport of Interstellar Neutral Helium throughout the Heliosphere

Federico Fraternale et al.

Summary: A new model has been developed to study the interaction between the solar wind and the local interstellar medium, focusing on the transport of interstellar neutral helium and the deviations in properties caused by charge exchange processes. It shows that secondary helium atoms born in the outer heliosheath exhibit an average deflection of around 12 degrees in front of the heliopause, with significant temperature anisotropy and velocity distribution function asymmetries observed even for primary helium atoms without charge exchange experience.

Simulating observable structures due to a perturbed interstellar medium in front of astrospheric bow shocks in 3D MHD

L. R. Baalmann et al.

Summary: This study simulated the observable structure of the astrosphere of the runaway blue supergiant lambda Cephei by introducing perturbations into the otherwise homogeneous interstellar medium, leading to different shock structures and observational images depending on the type of perturbation and viewing angles.

3D MHD astrospheres: applications to IRC-10414 and Betelgeuse

Summary: This study employs 3D MHD simulations to investigate the circumstellar medium of runaway M-type red supergiant stars, finding that when the direction of ISM flow and magnetization differs by a few degrees, the bow shock is stabilized and the structure becomes smoother. The simulations fit well observations of the astrospheres of several runaway red supergiant stars.
