Metal FDM, a new extrusion-based additive manufacturing technology for manufacturing of metallic parts: a review

Haidar Ramazani et al.

Summary: Recently, various additive manufacturing methods have been used to produce metallic objects, with metals being a popular choice due to their superior properties. Metal fused deposition modeling (metal FDM) is a relatively new and cost-effective technique compared to other metal AM methods. This review paper examines the parameters and characteristics of the metal FDM process and discusses the challenges and gaps in manufacturing components with desired characteristics.

Surface Structuring via Additive Manufacturing to Improve the Performance of Metal and Polymer Joints

Xin Zou et al.

Summary: This study fabricated different structures on TC4 surfaces via electron beam melting method to enhance the joint performance of TC4 titanium alloy and UHMWPE for biomedical applications. Strong direct bonding between UHMWPE and TC4 was achieved, and the interfacial bonding behavior of TC4-UHMWPE joints was further discussed. The importance of combining macro- and micromechanical interlocking for improving metal-polymer joint performance was demonstrated in this study.

High-cycle bending fatigue properties of additive-manufactured ABS and PLA polymers fabricated by fused deposition modeling 3D-printing

M. Azadi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of print direction on the high-cycle bending fatigue properties of polymer parts made by FDM 3D printing. Results showed that PLA specimens printed horizontally had better fatigue lifetimes than ABS samples. Factors such as print direction, material, and stress level were found to be statistically significant in influencing fatigue strength.

Augmenting effect of infill density and annealing on mechanical properties of PETG and CFPETG composites fabricated by FDM

K. Sathish Kumar et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of FDM infill density on the mechanical properties of PETG and CFPETG samples, showing that a 100% infill density enhances hardness, tensile strength, impact strength, and flexural strength. Subsequent annealing increases interlayer diffusion bonding, further enhancing mechanical properties.
