An ensemble architecture of deep convolutional Segnet and Unet networks for building semantic segmentation from high-resolution aerial images

Abolfazl Abdollahi et al.

Summary: Extracting building features from high-resolution aerial imagery is challenging due to obstacles such as shadows, trees, and cars. This study proposes a new deep learning method, Seg-Unet, which combines Segnet and Unet techniques to improve the accuracy of building extraction from high-resolution remote sensing images. The proposed method outperforms other methods and achieves 92.73% accuracy on the Massachusetts building dataset.

Yield prediction with machine learning algorithms and satellite images

Alireza Sharifi

Summary: The study divided the entire growth period into three parts and evaluated the proposed model in one of the major barley production areas in Iran. Results showed that the gaussian process regression algorithm performed the best among the four machine learning methods, estimating yield with an r(2) of 0.84, root mean square error of 737 kg ha(-1), and mean absolute error of 650 kg ha(-1) one month before harvest.

Assessing Burned Areas in Wildfires and Prescribed Fires with Spectral Indices and SAR Images in the Margalla Hills of Pakistan

Aqil Tariq et al.

Summary: This study assessed wildfires and prescribed fires in the Margalla Hills of Pakistan using remote sensing techniques, comparing the severity of different types of fires in different seasons. The research found significant differences in severity between summer wildfires and prescribed fires, with the SAR variable NSR p_95 identified as a suitable alternative for detecting fire events.

The Relationship between Neighborhood Characteristics and Homicide in Karachi, Pakistan

Salma Hamza et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the spatial and temporal patterns of homicide incidences in Karachi from 2009 to 2018, revealing that homicide hotspots expanded and decreased over different time periods. The number of homicides was positively related to the percentage of population speaking Balochi, while negatively related to unplanned low-density residential areas and police patrolled regions. The findings suggest that the relationship between homicides and influential factors varies across the study area, and the analysis methods used can be applied to explore violent crime in other cities with similar social contexts.

Monitoring of Land Use-Land Cover Change and Potential Causal Factors of Climate Change in Jhelum District, Punjab, Pakistan, through GIS and Multi-Temporal Satellite Data

Muhammad Majeed et al.

Summary: The study found that most farmers believe that climate change has become more severe in the past 30 years, leading to issues such as reduced rainfall, drought, and decreased irrigation water. The overall accuracy of image classification was relatively high, showing a clear association between land use-land cover changes and temperature, NDBI, and NDVI.

Monitoring and Modeling the Patterns and Trends of Urban Growth Using Urban Sprawl Matrix and CA-Markov Model: A Case Study of Karachi, Pakistan

Muhammad Fahad Baqa et al.

Summary: Understanding the spatial growth of Karachi, Pakistan using satellite data and machine learning algorithms revealed expansion in the primary urban core and emergence of a new secondary urban core, with built-up area increasing at the expense of agricultural land. Implementation of afforestation programs improved vegetation coverage in the study area.

Spatio-temporal dynamic land cover changes and their impacts on the urban thermal environment in the Chittagong metropolitan area, Bangladesh

Md. Yousuf Gazi et al.

Summary: The study investigated the changes in LULC and LST in the rapidly expanding urban area of Bangladesh, finding that urban structures and bare lands have the highest LST, while vegetation and water bodies have the lowest. The research shows an increase in urban structures, a decrease in vegetation and bare lands, and a slight increase in water bodies. The increase in high-temperature LU types and decrease in low-temperature LU types led to a 6.5-degree Celsius increase in mean annual temperature.
