Potential of microalgae as a sustainable feed ingredient for aquaculture

Senthil Nagappan et al.

Summary: The aquaculture industry is growing rapidly, and with it, the demand for aquafeed is also increasing. Traditional feed ingredients like fish meal and terrestrial plants are facing sustainability and environmental issues. Therefore, alternative and environmentally sustainable sources of feed ingredients, such as microalgae biomass, are being explored for their potential in aquaculture.

Selenium enrichment in the marine microalga Nannochloropsis oceanica

Barbara O. Guimaraes et al.

Summary: Selenium-enriched ingredients are gaining interest in aquaculture for their positive effects on fish health and growth. This study assessed the suitability of inorganic selenium species for producing selenium-enriched N. oceanica biomass for aquafeed, finding that selenite had minor negative effects on cell growth and was better accumulated than selenate. A concentration of 30μM selenite was selected for pilot-scale cultivation, resulting in similar selenium accumulation compared to flask cultivation.

The application of microalgae biomass and bio-products as aquafeed for aquaculture

Fufeng Chen et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the importance of using microalgae as aquafeed in aquaculture, introduces methods for producing microalgae-based feed, and evaluates the effects of microalgae feed on aquatic animals. Furthermore, it provides an in-depth discussion on the biosynthesis of high-value components in algal cells.
