Theranostics Through the Synergistic Cooperation of Heterometallic Complexes

Marta Redrado et al.

Summary: Heterometallic drugs offer enhanced therapeutic potential through careful selection of different metallic fragments, as well as the incorporation of traceability features. The integration of traceability and therapy in one system, known as theranostic agents, is particularly important in cancer research. The well-established therapeutic potential of Pt-II-, Ru-II- and Au-I-based drugs, combined with the outstanding optical properties of d(6) transition metal complexes, allow for the development of traceable metallodrugs that can be fine-tuned for a new generation of drugs.

Multifunctional Heterometallic IrIII-AuI Probes as Promising Anticancer and Antiangiogenic Agents

Marta Redrado et al.

Summary: A new class of emissive cyclometallated Ir-III-Au-I complexes with a bis(diphenylphosphino) methanide bridging ligand was synthesized successfully. These complexes showed different bioactivity in A549 lung carcinoma cells versus endothelial cells, mainly affecting the mitochondrial and lysosomal distribution within the cells.

Auranofin reveals therapeutic anticancer potential by triggering distinct molecular cell death mechanisms and innate immunity in mutant p53 non-small cell lung cancer

Laurie Freire Boullosa et al.

Summary: Auranofin (AF), an FDA-approved antirheumatic drug, exhibits anticancer properties by inhibiting TrxR in non-small cell lung cancer cells. Mutant p53 expression enhances sensitivity to AF and leads to various cell death mechanisms including apoptosis and ferroptosis. AF also modulates the innate immune response, enhancing natural killer cell-mediated killing and dendritic cell maturation.
