Regulation of the formation and structure of biofilms by quorum sensing signal molecules packaged in outer membrane vesicles

Zhenqing Zhao et al.

Summary: Outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) can package and mediate signal molecules to regulate biofilm formation, promoting growth and changing structure of biofilms. OMV-mediated signals affect the composition of extracellular polymeric substances and lead to enhanced inhibition of other bacteria.

Effects of carbohydrate sources on a biofloc nursery system for whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei)

Tran Huu Tinh et al.

Summary: The study found that both corn starch and molasses addition can improve water quality, enhance biofloc growth, and affect shrimp growth and production in whiteleg shrimp culture system. However, adding corn starch resulted in higher shrimp growth rate and production compared to molasses addition.

Rearing water microbiomes in white leg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) larviculture assemble stochastically and are influenced by the microbiomes of live feed products

Jasmine Heyse et al.

Summary: This study investigated the dynamics and dominant community assembly processes in Litopenaeus vannamei larviculture tanks, finding that the community assembly over time was dominated by stochasticity. Peripheral microbiomes, such as live and dry feeds, were found to contribute significantly to the rearing water microbiome. Insights into the crucial role of peripheral microbiomes in maintaining health-promoting rearing water microbiomes were provided.

The identification and determination of toxin genes of Vibrio strains causing hemorrhagic disease on red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) using PCR

Pham Thi Hai Yen et al.

Summary: Data was collected from 30 strains of Vibrio sampled from different organs of Sciaenops ocellatus infection. Results showed high similarity in 16S rRNA region nucleotide sequences with published species, and the presence of toxin genes in most Vibrio strains. Six parameters were used to measure DNA polymorphism in this population, revealing high diversity. A phylogenetic tree divided the strains into six groups based on their genetic differences. The study also identified the presence of specific Vibrio species on different organs of the infected fish.

Antibiotic-resistant bacteria and gut microbiome communities associated with wild-caught shrimp from the United States versus imported farm-raised retail shrimp

Laxmi Sharma et al.

Summary: In the United States, the majority of the shrimp market is occupied by farm-raised shrimp, which are susceptible to infections and require antibiotics, leading to antibiotic-resistant bacteria. A study found a high prevalence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in commercially available raw and cooked shrimp, with higher resistance in cooked samples. This calls for a change in processing to mitigate the risk of antibiotic-resistant strains in cooked shrimp.

Supplementation of Ex-Situ Biofloc to Improve Growth Performance and Enhance Nutritional Values of the Pacific White Shrimp Rearing at Low Salinity Conditions

Umaporn Uawisetwathana et al.

Summary: The ex-situ biofloc technology shows potential as an effective strategy for climate change adaptation and mitigation in shrimp farming, enhancing water quality and improving shrimp growth performance and nutritional value under intensive culture at low salinity conditions. The use of ex-situ biofloc supplement with commercial pellet reduction led to significant improvements in water quality, shrimp weight, survival, and growth-related gene expression, indicating its promising role in sustainable shrimp production.

Biofloc Systems for Sustainable Production of Economically Important Aquatic Species: A Review

Muziri Mugwanya et al.

Summary: The global increase in population has raised food demand, leading to aquaculture as a solution to hunger and poverty. However, sustainable aquaculture development is hindered by limited resources and environmental impact. Biofloc technology offers a promising solution with high productivity, reduced resource usage, and minimal environmental impact, making it a viable option for sustainable aquaculture.
