Benthic exchange along a tropical estuarine salinity gradient during dry season: Biogeochemical and ecological implications

Anil Pratihary et al.

Summary: The study found that in the Mandovi Estuary in Western India during the dry season, benthic respiration, organic carbon mineralization, and nutrient exchange rates varied significantly along the salinity gradient, with benthic metabolism accounting for a significant portion of total community respiration. Nitrogen exchange was mainly controlled by salinity, while phosphorus exchange was influenced by sedimentary iron content and bottom water oxygen levels.

Effects of the middle Holocene high sea-level stand and climate on Amazonian mangroves

Marcelo C. L. Cohen et al.

Summary: Research in northern Brazil's Braganca Peninsula shows that between approximately 6250 and 5000 cal a BP, mangroves transitioned from Rhizophora to Avicennia dominance due to a combination of high sea level and a dry early-middle Holocene in the Amazon. However, from around 4300 cal a BP onwards, mangroves gradually migrated to lower tidal flats due to relative sea level fall and a wetter climate.
