Insights on platinum-carbon catalyst degradation mechanism for oxygen reduction reaction in acidic and alkaline media

Marc Francis Labata et al.

Summary: This study investigates the degradation mechanisms of platinum-carbon catalyst in both acidic and alkaline media via potential cycling. High potential cycling in acid leads to carbon surface oxide formation and severe ORR activity loss, while in alkaline it causes carbon layer dissolution and Pt agglomeration. These findings offer insights for developing mitigation strategies for stable fuel cell operation.

A quick evaluation method for the lifetime of the fuel cell MEA with the particle filter algorithm

Luyan He et al.

Summary: The study tested a group of membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) to develop a quick evaluating method for predicting their lifetimes using a particle filter algorithm to eliminate errors and developed a lifetime prediction model. Results showed that the prediction accuracy was greatly improved, but the voltage degradation rate was nonlinear during the entire lifetime of MEA and increased significantly near the end period. Further research is required to improve the linear degradation rate employed in most studies for lifetime prediction.

Microstructure reconstruction of the gas diffusion layer and analyses of the anisotropic transport properties

Heng Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the 3D microstructure of two types of GDL using two different microscopic reconstruction methods and compares the porosity and pore size distribution. The results show significant anisotropic transport properties of Toray GDL due to its disc-shape binder, while Freudenberg GDL exhibits mostly isotropic transport properties.
