Adequacy of time-series reduction for renewable energy systems

Leonard Goke et al.

Summary: The adequacy of time-series reduction depends on the length of the reduced time-series and how it is implemented into the model. Implementing the time-series as a chronological sequence with re-scaled time-steps prevents loss of load best, but results in overestimation of system costs for seasonal storage. Grouped periods require more time to solve for the same number of time-steps compared to chronological sequences.

Designing reliable future energy systems by iteratively including extreme periods in time-series aggregation

Holger Teichgraeber et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new method that includes extreme periods in time-series aggregation for reliable system design on reduced data sets. Results show that this method outperforms adding a predefined number of extreme periods based on statistical properties of the data in meeting electricity demand at all times.

Hybrid Hydrogen Home Storage for Decentralized Energy Autonomy

Kevin Knosala et al.

Summary: With the increasing share of distributed renewable energy sources, there is a growing interest in energy self-sufficient buildings with battery and hydrogen storage capacities. This study provides a comparison of potential technology pathways for residential energy storage in terms of economic performance, showing that by 2030, integrating reversible solid oxide cells and liquid organic hydrogen carriers in high-efficiency single-family buildings could achieve self-sufficient electricity and heat supply at a premium of 52% over grid electricity and reduce the total annualized cost by 80% compared to lithium-ion battery systems.

A statistical approach to identify asynchronous extreme events for multi-regional energy system models

Phuong Minh Khuong et al.

Summary: With the increasing complexity of multi-regional energy system models due to the deployment of variable renewable energy sources and interconnection of the power grid, this study proposes a statistical approach to investigate extreme events in different regions. By analyzing the tail of residual demand distributions, extreme-high and fluctuation events are identified as crucial for maintaining output accuracy when reducing resolution, leading to an accuracy level of 99.1% and a 20-fold reduction in execution time.
