Spatial disparity of life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions from corn straw-based bioenergy production in China

Yang Yang et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the greenhouse gas emissions of seven corn straw-based bioenergy conversion pathways across 30 provinces in China. It found that the spatial disparity of economic supply chains led to varying emissions levels across provinces, with most pathways showing emission reduction benefits but a few pathways exhibiting emissions in certain provinces. Additionally, the spatial teleconnection of economic supply chains showed that bioenergy production in one province could impact GHG emissions in other provinces.

Comparing biofuels through the lens of sustainability: A data envelopment analysis approach

Richard Cabrera-Jimenez et al.

Summary: This article analyzes the performance of 72 different biofuels routes based on 12 indicators covering the economic, environmental, and social dimensions. Results show that renewable diesel is a better option than ethanol-based blends or biodiesel, and waste biomass is preferred over cellulosic biomass or bio-oils. The selection of the carbon source is the most important decision and regional factors related to soil and climate should be considered.

Optimal crop planting pattern can be harmful to reach carbon neutrality: Evidence from food-energy-water-carbon nexus perspective

Liuyue He et al.

Summary: Global warming, water scarcity, and limited land resources pose significant challenges to ensuring food security. However, the current classical optimal planting pattern has limited effectiveness in achieving carbon neutrality goals and resource conservation. Research findings show that the optimal planting pattern may have negative impacts on carbon sequestration, but positive effects on water productivity and economic benefits. Therefore, it is recommended to redefine the optimal planting pattern in crop management to address the crisis of global warming.

Qiushuang Yang et al.

Summary: The study conducted a life cycle assessment of biochar incorporation in agriculture in China, finding that regions in central south, east and northeast China have significant carbon sequestration potential. The biochar system also showed potential in mitigating environmental issues such as marine aquatic biodiversity destruction and soil and water acidification. Sensitivity analysis indicated that biochar yield, carbon content, and electricity conversion efficiencies are critical parameters determining biochar system's carbon sequestration potential and environmental effects.
