Interaction Effects Between Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage Systems

Rogier Duijff et al.

Summary: Aquifer thermal energy storage (ATES) is an energy efficient technique that stores warm and cold water in aquifers to provide heating and cooling for buildings. However, the adoption of ATES in regions with high demand can lead to congestion issues in the aquifers. This research quantifies how well placement affects individual system performance and provides guidelines for planning and design. The results show that combining wells of the same temperature increases the thermal recovery efficiency of individual systems due to reduced surface area for heat loss, especially for systems with small storage volume and long well screens.

Environmental impacts of aquifer thermal energy storage (ATES)

Ruben Stemmle et al.

Summary: ATES is a promising environmentally friendly energy generation technology that can store thermal energy in groundwater and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. A novel life cycle assessment regression model and Monte Carlo simulation enable the analysis and evaluation of the environmental impacts of various ATES systems.
