Linking in situ charge accumulation to electronic structure in doped SrTiO3 reveals design principles for hydrogen-evolving photocatalysts

Benjamin Moss et al.

Summary: This study reveals the unique properties of La,Rh:SrTiO3 photocatalyst sheets by combining in situ spectroelectrochemical measurements with density functional theory. It demonstrates that the electronic structure reorganization induced by Rh reduction controls the electron lifetime, while La co-doping fixes Rh in the 3+ state to improve the lifetime of photogenerated electrons even at positive potentials. This understanding provides new insights into the design principles for water-splitting devices based on bandgap-engineered metal oxides.

Environmentally Benign Synthesis and Color Tuning of Strontium-Tantalum Perovskite Oxynitride and Its Solid Solutions

Takuya Sakata et al.

Summary: A facile method using urea as a nitriding agent was developed to prepare strontium-tantalum perovskite oxynitride and its solid solutions, providing environmentally benign alternatives to conventional inorganic pigments. The use of sol-gel-derived Ta2O5 gel allowed for faster nitridation at lower temperatures compared to conventional processes, while optimization of reaction conditions enabled the production of solid solutions with easily adjustable optical properties. The narrower band gaps of oxynitrides compared to oxides led to optical absorption and chromatic colors in the products.

Fan Gao et al.

Summary: The study constructed a hierarchical architecture of highly dispersed ZnS nanosheets vertically anchored on Zn-In-layered double hydroxide surfaces through an in situ etching growth process. The defective ZnS nanosheets grown perpendicularly on Zn-In-LDH surfaces exhibit good photocatalytic activity for hydrogen production under visible light, attributed to the large specific surface area, vertically grown ZnS nanosheets, and sulfur defects.
