Association of Plasmodium falciparum kelch13 R561H genotypes with delayed parasite clearance in Rwanda: an open-label, single-arm, multicentre, therapeutic efficacy study

Aline Uwimana et al.

Summary: This study confirms the emergence of artemisinin partial resistance in Rwanda. Although artemether-lumefantrine remains efficacious, vigilance for decreasing efficacy and further characterization of artemisinin partial resistance should be considered. Evaluation of additional antimalarials in Rwanda is also recommended.

Molecular surveillance of anti-malarial resistance pfcrt, pfmdr1, and pfk13 polymorphisms in African Plasmodium falciparum imported parasites to Wuhan, China

Weijia Cheng et al.

Summary: The study in Wuhan, China, found high prevalence of mutations associated with anti-malarial drug resistance in African Plasmodium falciparum isolates, with pfcrt and pfmdr1 showing different haplotypes and mutations. However, mutations related to artemether-lumefantrine resistance in pfmdr1 were observed, highlighting the importance of continued molecular surveillance despite no mutations detected in pfk13.

A review of the frequencies of Plasmodium falciparum Kelch 13 artemisinin resistance mutations in Africa

Leonard Ndwiga et al.

Summary: Artemisinin resistance emerged in Southeast Asia 13 years ago with the identification of the resistance conferring molecular marker, Pfk13. Recent identification of Pfk13 AR associated mutations in Tanzania, Uganda, and Rwanda raise concerns for malaria control in Africa. The spread of these mutations could reverse the progress made in malaria reduction over the past 20 years.
