A speech planning network for interactive language use

Gregg A. Castellucci et al.

Summary: During conversation, people take turns speaking and avoid interruption, which requires a remarkable degree of coordination. The latencies between turns, typically about 200 milliseconds, are considerably shorter than those observed in simple word-production tasks, indicating that speakers often plan their responses while listening to their partners. In this study, researchers used intracranial electrocorticography to measure neural activity and identified a planning-related speech network in the brain that is central to natural language generation during social interaction.

Constraints on vocal production learning in budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulates)

Michael S. Osmanski et al.

Summary: Budgerigars can learn to respond to specific stimuli with specific vocal responses, but they struggle to differentiate between different auditory stimuli coming from the same location, even when they are the same as the bird's own contact call. This suggests that social interaction likely plays a significant role in vocal production learning in budgerigars.

Flexible scaling and persistence of social vocal communication

Jingyi Chen et al.

Summary: The study identifies the role of mouse neurons from the lateral preoptic area in regulating vocal amplitude and bout durations, showcasing a two-step, di-synaptic neural circuit motif. Social context affects the range of vocal amplitudes and bout durations, with the LPOA disinhibition motif contributing to flexible loudness and bout duration.

Summary: The study showed how an auditory go cue transforms thalamocortical activity patterns and affects movement initiation, demonstrating the role of the cerebellar-thalamocortical pathway in context-dependent movement initiation.
