Toward Enantiomerically Pure β-Seleno-α-amino Acids via Stereoselective Se-Michael Additions to Chiral Dehydroalanines

Paula Oroz et al.

Summary: The study introduces a novel method for the chemo- and diastereoselective 1,4-conjugate additions of Se-nucleophiles to a chiral bicyclic dehydroalanine, offering a promising route for the synthesis of enantiomerically pure selenocysteine derivatives with high potential for chemical biology applications.

A Bifunctional N-Heterocyclic Carbene as a Noncovalent Organocatalyst for Enantioselective Aza-Michael Addition Reactions

Fangfang Guo et al.

Summary: Recently, chiral N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have been established as powerful catalysts for enantioselective bond-forming processes via noncovalent interactions. A bifunctional NHC with an embedded hydrogen-bonding motif has been reported in this study, showing remarkable tolerance of various Michael acceptors in an asymmetric aza-conjugate addition reaction, with catalytic efficiency far exceeding that of the benchmark tertiary amine-thiourea scaffold.

NHC-catalyzed covalent activation of heteroatoms for enantioselective reactions

Runjiang Song et al.

Summary: This review evaluates and summarizes the covalent activation of heteroatoms enabled by N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) organic catalysts for enantioselective reactions. Sulfur, oxygen, and nitrogen atoms can be activated in this manner to construct chiral carbon-heteroatom bonds with high optical enantioselectivities. The key lies in the formation of intermediates covalently bound to the NHC catalyst, in which the heteroatom of the substrate is activated as a nucleophilic reactive site.
