Conversion of Aryl Aldehydes to Benzyl Iodides and Diarylmethanes by H3PO3/I2

Fang Lv et al.

Summary: For the first time, H3PO3 was utilized as both the reducing reagent and the promotor in reductive benzylation reactions with aryl aldehydes. The combination of H3PO3/I-2 enabled various aromatic aldehydes to undergo iodination reactions and Friedel-Crafts type reactions with arenes, easily producing benzyl iodides and diarylmethanes in good yields while also leading to intramolecular cyclization reactions to give corresponding cyclic compounds. This novel strategy offers advantages of easy-handling, low-cost, and metal-free conditions.

Ni-Catalyzed Arylbenzylation of Alkenylarenes: Kinetic Studies Reveal Autocatalysis by ZnX2**

Roshan K. Dhungana et al.

Summary: In this study, a Ni-catalyzed regioselective arybenzylation of alkenylarenes with benzyl halides and arylzinc reagents was reported. The reaction yields differently substituted 1,1,3-triarylpropyl structures reminiscent of oligoresveratrol natural products. Kinetic studies show that the reaction proceeds via a rate-limiting single-electron-transfer process and is autocatalyzed by in-situ-generated ZnX2, leading to a three-fold increase in reaction rate.

Base-Activated Latent Heteroaromatic Sulfinates as Nucleophilic Coupling Partners in Palladium-Catalyzed Cross-Coupling Reactions

Xinlan A. F. Cook et al.

Summary: Heteroaromatic sulfinates are effective nucleophilic reagents in Pd-0-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions with aryl halides. Base-activated, latent sulfinate reagents, such as beta-nitrile and beta-ester sulfones, have been introduced to address challenges in purifying and solubilizing metal sulfinate salts, as well as their tolerance to multi-step transformations. These latent sulfinate reagents have proven to be stable through multi-step substrate elaboration and amenable to scale-up processes.
