Switching between Thermal Initiation and Photoinitiation Redirects RAFT-Mediated Polymerization-Induced Self-Assembly

Xuhui Luo et al.

Summary: RAFT-mediated polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) is a method of growing interest for the preparation of well-defined block copolymer nano-objects. By switching between thermal initiation and photoinitiation, the polymerization kinetics and self-assembled structures of PISA can be redirected. The difference in polymerization kinetics between thermally initiated PISA and photo-PISA is the main reason for the morphological difference observed in the block copolymer nano-objects. The combination of thermal initiation and photoinitiation allows for further control over the morphologies of the nano-objects.

Lewis Pair Catalyzed Regioselective Polymerization of (E,E)-Alkyl Sorbates for the Synthesis of (AB)n Sequenced Polymers

Wuchao Zhao et al.

Summary: This study applied Lewis pairs composed of N-heterocyclic olefins and Al-based compounds for 1,4-selective polymerization of (E,E)-methyl sorbate and (E,E)-ethyl sorbate. The system exhibited high catalytic activity and initiation efficiency with the formation of polymers with tunable molecular weight and narrow molecular weight distribution. Additionally, block copolymerization and conversion to different polymers with strict sequence structures were realized.

Dual-initiating and living frustrated Lewis pairs: expeditious synthesis of biobased thermoplastic elastomers

Yun Bai et al.

Summary: The authors report the synthesis of well-defined PMMBL-based ABA tri-block copolymers with superior mechanical properties compared to PMMA-based counterparts, enabled by dual-initiating and living frustrated Lewis pairs. The PMMBL, a biobased acrylic polymer, shows enhanced properties over PMMA, particularly at high working temperatures, due to the unique synthesis method involving dual-initiating and living frustrated Lewis pairs.

Aqueous ROPISA of α-amino acid N-carboxyanhydrides: polypeptide block secondary structure controls nanoparticle shape anisotropy

Chloe Grazon et al.

Summary: Polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) is an efficient one-step process to obtain nanomaterials. ROPISA using aqueous ring-opening polymerization of alpha-amino acid N-carboxyanhydride yields well-defined nanoassemblies. The secondary structure of the polypeptides is the main driving force in stabilizing the anisotropic rod-like nanostructures.
