Photoinduced Transition-Metal-Free Alkynylation of Alkyl Pinacol Boronates

Dunfa Shi et al.

Summary: An unprecedented visible-light-induced transition-metal-free alkynylation of alkyl pinacol boronates was demonstrated using alkynyl phenylsulfones as alkynylation reagents and 4CzIPN as the organic photocatalyst. Common Lewis bases like sodium methoxide or sodium hydroxide were used to generate photoactive tetra-coordinated boron species. The selective monoalkynylation of diboronates was achieved, preserving one boron group in the product for potential further transformations, as confirmed by radical trapping experiments and EPR analysis.

Stereoselective Diboration of Spirocyclobutenes: A Platform for the Synthesis of Spirocycles with Orthogonal Exit Vectors

Luis Novoa et al.

Summary: The diastereo- and enantioselective diboration of spirocyclobutenes allows for the rapid preparation of a wide variety of chiral spirocyclic building blocks. The chemoselective functionalization of the carbon-boron bond in the products, including a stereospecific sp(3)-sp(2) Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction, provides a powerful tool for controlling the directionality and nature of exit vectors in the spirocyclic framework.

Visible-Light-Induced α-Amino C-H Bond Arylation Enabled by Electron Donor-Acceptor Complexes

Chang Xu et al.

Summary: A novel visible-light-induced alpha-amino C-H bond arylation protocol has been discovered, enabled by electron donor-acceptor complexes. This method does not require a photoredox catalyst, transition metal, oxidant, or exclusion of oxygen or moisture. High yields of arylated amines were obtained by directly irradiating a mixture of tertiary amines and benzonitriles with visible light in the presence of Cs2CO3 in N,N-diethylethanamide.

Photocatalyzed Radical Relayed Regio- and Stereoselective Trifluoromethylthiolation-Boration

Qiang Zhang et al.

Summary: This work presents a sequential radical difunctionalization strategy for constructing fluorine-containing vinylboronates and alkylboronates using the integrated redox-active reagent N-trifluoromethylthiophthali-mide. This method offers a scalable and practical protocol for trifluoromethylthiolation-borylation of unsaturated hydrocarbons in a highly regio- and stereoselective manner, which can be further converted into valuable synthons through boryl migration.

Generation of Functionalized Alkyl Radicals via the Direct Photoexcitation of 2,2′-(Pyridine-2,6-diyl)diphenol-Based Borates

Yusuke Miyamoto et al.

Summary: A new type of alkylborate has been developed for radical generation through direct photoexcitation, utilizing organoboronic acids or potassium trifluoroborates as reactants. The easy availability of organoboron compounds is a key advantage, and the excited states of these borates can also function as strong reductants for various transformations.

Suzanne Willems et al.

Summary: A novel cascade Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling method has been developed for the synthesis of 9,10-dihydrophenanthrenes. The method allows for full site-selectivity control of biaryls with unsymmetrical substitution pattern and achieves complete stereoretention in the challenging coupling of an alkyl 1,2-bisboronic pinacol ester with a secondary boronate.
