A SARS-CoV-2 Spike Binding DNA Aptamer that Inhibits Pseudovirus Infection by an RBD-Independent Mechanism**

Anton Schmitz et al.

Summary: A specific aptamer that interacts with the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 has been identified, showing potent and specific inhibition of pseudoviral infection despite not blocking the virus's interaction with ACE2. This study opens new avenues for developing inhibitors of SARS-CoV-2 infection and highlights the potential of aptamers as drug candidates and tools for unraveling previously inaccessible infection modalities.

Challenges in ensuring global access to COVID-19 vaccines: production, affordability, allocation, and deployment

Olivier J. Wouters et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic may not end globally until vaccines that protect against severe disease and drive herd immunity are widely distributed. While vaccines have been authorized for human use in many countries, achieving global control of COVID-19 requires not only licensed vaccines but also mass production, affordable pricing, global allocation, and wide local deployment.

Scaling up COVID-19 rapid antigen tests: promises and challenges

Rosanna W. Peeling et al.

Summary: WHO recommends antigen-detection rapid diagnostic tests (Ag-RDTs) with at least 80% sensitivity and 97% specificity for patients with symptoms consistent with COVID-19. Ag-RDTs may show high false negative rates after the acute phase, suggesting the need for a combination of molecular and serological tests. In low prevalence settings and situations where infection needs to be ruled out, Ag-RDTs with high negative predictive values can be used confidently, but high false positive rates in low prevalence areas require further confirmation.

Discovery and Characterization of Spike N-Terminal Domain-Binding Aptamers for Rapid SARS-CoV-2 Detection

Nataly Kacherovsky et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused devastation to families, healthcare, economies, and societies globally. Molecular recognition agents that bind to specific viral proteins are crucial for rapid diagnostics and targeted therapeutics. This work demonstrates the selection of novel DNA aptamers that bind to the SARS-CoV-2 spike glycoprotein with high specificity and affinity, making them promising tools for COVID-19 diagnostics.

Limit of detection in different matrices of 19 commercially available rapid antigen tests for the detection of SARS-CoV-2

Ana Cubas-Atienzar et al.

Summary: In this study, an independent evaluation was conducted on the limit of detection (LOD) of 19 marketed Ag-RDTs, revealing that most tests performed well with direct culture supernatant but showed decreased sensitivity in Amies media. Additionally, after 7 days of storage at -80 degrees C, some tests exhibited reduced efficiency on stored dilutions of SARS-CoV-2.
