Simultaneous Detection of Ruthenium and Osmium by Photochemical Vapor Generation-Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry

Qing Yang et al.

Summary: Efficient simultaneous photochemical vapor generation (PVG) of ruthenium (Ru) and osmium (Os) in formic acid medium was demonstrated, with impressive limits of detection achieved for both elements. The synergistic enhancement from cobalt and cadmium ions on PVG efficiency was discovered, and the accuracy of the proposed PVG-ICP-MS method was validated through analysis of water samples. Additionally, volatile compounds of Ru were trapped and generation of Ru carbonyls was verified by high-resolution ESI-MS.

Impact of Gas-Liquid Interface on Photochemical Vapor Generation

Ying Yu et al.

Summary: Enhancement and/or suppression effects on the photochemical vapor generation (PVG) of 17 elements at the gas-liquid interface were observed, with up to 7.3-fold increase in analytical sensitivity in the presence of gas-liquid interface(s) compared to traditional methods. The introduction of gas-liquid interface(s) and elevated temperature likely facilitated radical generation, subsequent reactions, and separation/detection of volatile species of elements, while unstable intermediate substances/products decomposed at high temperatures, decreasing analyte signal response. This finding contributes to understanding element transport under UV irradiation and has potential applications in trace element analysis in environmental and biological samples.

Natural mineral assisted photochemical vapor generation for determination of trace inorganic arsenic by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry

Haolin Bao et al.

Summary: The study found that the natural mineral vanadic titanomagnetite tailing can enhance the sensitivity of elements in photochemical vapor generation (PVG) and is more stable compared to commercial nano-Fe3O4. This research is important for developing novel catalytical materials in PVG and understanding the environmental impact of tailings on ecological environment.

Photochemical Vapor Generation of Halides in Organic-Acid-Free Media: Mechanism Study and Analysis of Water Samples

Jing Hu et al.

Summary: In this study, it was found that photochemical vapor generation of halides can be achieved in organic-acid-free media, with performance comparable to traditional scenarios using acetic acid. The role of copper acetate complexes in facilitating the generation of halides was highlighted. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was used to identify methyl halides as principal volatile compounds, and various intermediate species were confirmed using different analytical methods. The method's application in analyzing bottled water and seawater showed spike recoveries between 92 and 101%.

Jakob Heller et al.

Summary: Photochemical hydrogen evolution provides promising prospects for light harvesting. Hydrated monovalent vanadium ions with varying hydration shell sizes were studied using photodissociation spectroscopy. The competition between water loss and hydrogen evolution was observed in the clusters, with electronic transitions modeled using multireference methods for smaller clusters.

Copper-ion assisted photochemical vapor generation of bromide and bromate

Richard M. de Oliveira et al.

Summary: The presence of Cu2+ significantly enhances the photochemical vapor generation (PVG) efficiencies of both Br- and BrO3- species, with Cu2+ serving as a photocatalyst in both PVG systems. Efficient synthesis of CH3Br is achieved through a flow-through photochemical reactor, while high PVG efficiency for Br- is achieved using a germicidal lamp.
