A Preprocessing Tool for Enhanced Ion Mobility-Mass Spectrometry-Based Omics Workflows

Aivett Bilbao et al.

Summary: This article introduces a method and software that can improve the data quality of ion mobility-mass spectrometry measurements. The software generates new MS files with enhanced signal quality and in the same instrument format using various algorithmic implementations. The advantages of the tool include increased accuracy in lipid annotations and improved processing speed.

Improving the Speed and Selectivity of Newborn Screening Using Ion Mobility Spectrometry-Mass Spectrometry

James N. Dodds et al.

Summary: Detection and diagnosis of congenital disorders is the main goal of newborn screening programs worldwide. Mass spectrometry (MS) is widely used for high-throughput NBS sampling, while ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) is explored to enhance the accuracy of MS assays. Current commercially available platforms do not provide the required resolution, but IMS can uniquely separate many diagnostic NBS biomarkers.

Citrullination of Amyloid-β Peptides in Alzheimer's Disease

Soumya Mukherjee et al.

Summary: The study identified citrullination of A beta in sporadic and familial Alzheimer's disease brains using high-resolution mass spectrometry. Results demonstrated a common mechanism for citrullination of A beta in both types of AD. Citrullination of A beta is a remarkably common post-translational modification closely associated with A beta formation and accumulation in AD pathology.

Quantification of N-terminal amyloid-β isoforms reveals isomers are the most abundant form of the amyloid-β peptide in sporadic Alzheimer's disease

Soumya Mukherjee et al.

Summary: Plaques in Alzheimer's disease brains accumulate due to decreased clearance of amyloid-beta peptides which undergo extensive isomerization, particularly at the Asp-1 and Asp-7 residues. Isomerization significantly alters the structure of the peptide, affecting its degradation, oligomer assembly, and the binding of therapeutic antibodies. The accumulation of extensively isomerized amyloid-beta is correlated with the presence of aggregation-prone amyloid-beta(42) in Alzheimer's disease brains.
