Lysosome-targeted red-fluorescent carbon dots for turn-on detection of permanganate and pH in vivo and in vitro

Dan Chang et al.

Summary: In this study, red emission carbon dots (RCDs) were prepared using a hydrothermal carbonization approach, showing excellent stability, biocompatibility, and water solubility for tracking permanganate and pH. The RCDs can serve as turn-on fluorescent sensors for quantitative analysis of permanganate with a detection limit of 14.5 nM, and exhibit a special responsive functionality towards pH in the range of 6.2-8.2. Additionally, they can target lysosome in living cells and be used for label-free, real-time visualization of permanganate and pH fluctuations in vivo and in vitro.
