Developmental regulation of barrier- and non-barrier blood vessels in the CNS

A. Ben-Zvi et al.

Summary: The blood-brain barrier is crucial for maintaining tissue homeostasis in the central nervous system, achieved by microvascular endothelial cells forming a tight barrier that restricts the entry of water-soluble molecules. The Wnt/beta-catenin pathway plays a significant role in the development of these unique endothelial properties.

Mammillary body injury in neonatal encephalopathy: a multicentre, retrospective study

Maarten H. Lequin et al.

Summary: The study highlights the importance of assessing the status of the mammillary bodies (MBs) in neonatal encephalopathy and the need for long-term follow-up of infants with abnormal MB signal to determine effects on cognition. It also suggests that therapeutic hypothermia may not provide complete protection against MB injury and calls for improvements in scanning protocols to properly assess the MBs.

MRI measures of hypothalamic injury are associated with glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist treatment response in people with hypothalamic obesity

Summary: The study found that greater hypothalamic damage, especially involving the mammillary body (MB), is associated with greater reductions in adiposity in patients with hypothalamic obesity who received treatment with GLP-1RA.

Time to put the mammillothalamic pathway into context

Christopher M. Dillingham et al.

Summary: Research has shown that the mammillary body-anterior thalamic axis plays a crucial role in memory and amnesia, affecting contextual and temporal memory processing. The projections from the mammillothalamic tract have significant distal influence over thalamo-cortical and hippocampo-cortical interactions.

Mammillary body atrophy and other MRI correlates of school-age outcome following neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy

Kim V. Annink et al.

Summary: In children with HIE, neurocognitive and memory problems are common at school-age, regardless of therapeutic hypothermia. Hippocampal volumes and MB atrophy are linked to various aspects of cognitive function, and normal MB and larger hippocampi are associated with higher global fractional anisotropy. Injury to the MB and hippocampi may serve as early biomarkers for neurocognitive and memory issues in children with HIE.
