Don't be fooled: false flowers in Asteraceae

Teng Zhang et al.

Summary: The Asteraceae family, also known as the sunflower or daisy family, makes up about 10% of all angiosperm species and features unique inflorescences that combine individual flowers into dense structures called pseudanthia. Recent data suggests that pseudanthia are analogous to single flowers not only morphologically, but also at a developmental and genetic level, highlighting their complexity and importance in the study of patterning and inflorescence diversity within this evolutionary successful family. Such knowledge also holds practical significance for commercially important crops within the family.
