Turning biennial into biannual harvest: Long-term assessment of Arabica coffee-macadamia intercropping and irrigation synergism by biological and economic indices

Rogerio P. Soratto et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the productivity and economic performance of Arabica coffee-macadamia intercropping under rainfed and irrigated conditions in southeastern Brazil for 13 years. It found that irrigation significantly increased coffee and macadamia yields. Under rainfed conditions, intercropping showed relatively higher benefits, while the combination of irrigation and intercropping technologies had a cumulative effect on profitability.

Intercropping-A Low Input Agricultural Strategy for Food and Environmental Security

Sagar Maitra et al.

Summary: The traditional intercropping system reduces inputs by diversifying crop cultivation, improving the quality of the agro-ecosystem, and ensuring resource utilization efficiency. Proper management of intercropping enhances the combined yields of crops by minimizing intercrop competition and maximizing resource utilization for sustainable agricultural practices.

Land productivity and water use efficiency of maize-soybean strip intercropping systems in semi-arid areas: A case study in Punjab Province, Pakistan

Muhammad Ali Raza et al.

Summary: The study shows that intercropping maize and soybean in irrigated farmland can enhance crop productivity, with higher soybean yields in the 2M3S intercropping pattern. Maize is a stronger competitor for water in the intercropping systems, particularly in the 2M3S pattern.

Photosynthetic Activities and Photosynthetic Nitrogen Use Efficiency of Maize Crop Under Different Planting Patterns and Nitrogen Fertilization

Jamal Nasar et al.

Summary: The study found that intercropping with nitrogen fertilization can significantly increase the yield and dry biomass of maize. The land equivalent ratio (LER) was >1, indicating more efficient resource utilization by intercrops. Additionally, intercropping with nitrogen fertilization improved leaf photosynthetic activities and PNUE of maize crop, leading to better yield.
