Changes in diversity and community assembly of jumping spiders (Araneae: Salticidae) after rainforest conversion to rubber and oil palm plantations

Andre Junggebauer et al.

Summary: The study compares salticid spider communities in different land-use systems in Jambi Province, Sumatra, Indonesia and finds that salticid richness is highest in jungle rubber, similar to rainforest, but different from oil palm and rubber plantations. The research highlights the importance of habitat filtering in shaping salticid spider communities in monoculture plantations and provides insights into mechanisms shaping arthropod top predator communities in canopies of tropical ecosystems.

Rainforest conversion to monocultures favors generalist ants with large colonies

Jan J. Kreider et al.

Summary: The conversion of rainforests to agricultural systems results in changes in trait composition of canopy ant communities, with differences in nesting habit, feeding habit, and colony size. Phylogenetic analysis shows that rainforests harbor recently diverged endemic ant species that are vulnerable to conversion to agricultural systems. Ant communities in plantation systems may have important consequences for ecosystem functioning and services due to ecological differences along the land-use gradient.
