Temperature-Controlled Dual-Beam Optical Trap for Single Particle Studies of Organic Aerosol

Alexander Logozzo et al.

Summary: An optical trapping cell was described for suspending particles using two counter-propagating beams in a temperature-controlled environment. The dual-beam optical trap can hold single micron-sized droplets at temperatures down to 253 K for hours, allowing for high precision measurements of physical properties using cavity-enhanced Raman scattering. The evaporation of highly oxygenated organic systems was monitored using CERS to determine temperature-dependent vapor pressures and enthalpies of vaporization.

Impact of combustion conditions on physical and morphological properties of biomass burning aerosol

Rudra P. Pokhrel et al.

Summary: The study explores the relationship between biomass burning particle density and burning conditions, with the findings indicating that smoldering-dominated particles have a stable density while flaming-dominated particles show a decrease in density with increasing particle size. The research also proposes a relationship between mass mobility exponent and modified combustion efficiency to assess the applicability of Mie theory in optical closure calculations.

Accurate Representations of the Microphysical Processes Occurring during the Transport of Exhaled Aerosols and Droplets

Jim S. Walker et al.

Summary: Aerosols and droplets expelled during respiratory events are crucial in transmitting pathogens, but there are uncertainties in understanding the microphysics of aerosol droplets. Research shows that sedimentation outcomes vary in sensitivity to composition and environmental conditions based on droplet size, with evaporation process nature playing a key role in influencing the outcome.

High time resolution measurements of droplet evaporation kinetics and particle crystallisation

D. A. Hardy et al.

Summary: A refined technique for observing the complete evaporation behaviour of free-falling droplets with ultra-high time resolution is introduced and demonstrated through experiments on aqueous sodium chloride droplets. The technique allows for the observation of rapid, complex morphological changes and crystallisation events, providing insights into the evaporation behaviour and crystallisation mechanisms.

A dual-droplet approach for measuring the hygroscopicity of aqueous aerosol

Jack M. Choczynski et al.

Summary: Accurate characterization of the water activity and hygroscopicity of aqueous aerosol material is crucial for predicting the behavior of aerosol particles in humid conditions. The study describes measurements of hygroscopicity using a linear quadrupole electrodynamic balance, demonstrating the accuracy of RH determination with different probe droplets. The findings show that NaCl and LiCl are effective probes for measuring RH across a wide range, and the approach has advantages for characterizing samples with various characteristics.

Rapid transformation of ambient absorbing aerosols from West African biomass burning

Huihui Wu et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the evolution of smoke aerosols emitted from biomass burning in West Africa, particularly in the Senegal region. The research reveals that the aerosols, rich in black carbon emissions, undergo significant changes in their chemical and optical properties during transport. Additionally, the study highlights the importance of secondary processing in the production of brown carbon in the region, with implications for regional radiative forcing models.

Jim M. Haywood et al.

Summary: The representations of clouds, aerosols, and cloud-aerosol-radiation impacts are key uncertainties in climate change. The southeast Atlantic region is optimal for studying aerosol-radiation and aerosol-cloud interactions, but existing satellite observations lack the necessary resolution for detailed assessment. The CLARIFY-2017 program aims to improve model estimates, cloud properties, satellite retrievals, and the impacts of aerosols in weather and climate models.
