A substrate-induced synthesis of 6H-Chromeno[4,3-b]quinolin-6-ones directly from anilines, 4-hydroxycoumarins, and DMSO without any catalysts and additives in one pot has been developed. This protocol highlights the dual roles of 4-hydroxycoumarins, not only as reactants but also as activators of DMSO to provide a one-carbon unit in the desired products.
