Ferrimagnetic spintronics

Se Kwon Kim et al.

Summary: Ferrimagnets, composed of multiple antiferromagnetically coupled magnetic elements, offer advantages of both ferromagnets and antiferromagnets, including easy control of magnetization by external field, faster dynamics than ferromagnets, and potential for high-density devices. This Review provides a summary of recent progress in ferrimagnetic spintronics, focusing on functionalities such as spin transport, spin texture dynamics, and all-optical switching.

The 2021 Magnonics Roadmap

Anjan Barman et al.

Summary: Magnonics is a burgeoning research field that focuses on utilizing spin waves to transmit, store, and process information, showing significant progress in the past decade. The key challenges include excitation of sub-100 nm wavelength magnons, manipulation on the nanoscale, and creation of sub-micrometre devices using low-Gilbert damping magnetic materials. Magnonics offers advantages such as lower energy consumption, easier integrability, compatibility with CMOS structure, reprogrammability, shorter wavelength, smaller device features, anisotropic properties, negative group velocity, non-reciprocity, and efficient tunability by various external stimuli.

Observation of Pure-Spin-Current Diodelike Effect at the Au/Pt Interface

Pavlo Omelchenko et al.

Summary: The study explores asymmetric transport of pure-spin currents across an interface of dissimilar nonmagnetic materials Au/Pt. Experimental results demonstrate that transmission of pure-spin current from Au into Pt is twice as efficient as from Pt into Au. The findings are interpreted by extending conventional spin-pumping, spin-diffusion theory to include boundary conditions of reflected and transmitted spin current at the Au/Pt interface that are proportional to the established spin chemical potentials on either side of the interface.

Resonant Spin Transmission Mediated by Magnons in a Magnetic Insulator Multilayer Structure

Yabin Fan et al.

Summary: The research demonstrates that coherent magnons can efficiently transfer spins above the magnon bandgap of magnetic insulators, with the standing spin-wave mode greatly enhancing spin flow. In contrast, a shutdown of spin transmission is observed within the magnon bandgap due to the blocking of coherent magnons.

Room-Temperature Antiferromagnetic Resonance and Inverse Spin-Hall Voltage in Canted Antiferromagnets

I Boventer et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that spin pumping signals induced by the resonance of canted antiferromagnets with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction can generate easily observable inverse spin-Hall voltages. Using a bilayer of hematite/heavy metal as a model system, the research shows that antiferromagnetic resonance and associated inverse spin-Hall voltages can be measured at room temperature. Direct information about the mode handedness can be obtained by comparing different materials.

Magnonics Based on Thin-Film Iron Garnets

Lutong Sheng et al.

Summary: Spin waves and magnons in magnetic materials are collective excitations of electron spins that can be used as information carriers for low-power computing systems. Thin-film iron garnets are ideal platforms for spin waves, with recent progress including short-wavelength spin waves in low damping YIG films.

Spin Pumping of an Easy-Plane Antiferromagnet Enhanced by Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction

Hailong Wang et al.

Summary: This study reports dc spin pumping by the acoustic resonant mode in a canted easy-plane antiferromagnet alpha-Fe2O3. The observed spin-pumping signals in alpha-Fe2O3-metal heterostructures are attributed to resonance-induced spin injection and inverse spin Hall effect, revealing intriguing physics underlying the low-frequency spin dynamics and transport in these structures.

Topological surface state manipulation of magnetic damping and surface anisotropy in topological insulator/nonmagnet/CoFe heterostructures

Guanjie Wu et al.

Summary: By studying the TI/nonmagnet/CoFe heterostructures, it was found that in addition to the common spin pumping contribution, MPE also significantly contributes to the magnetic damping; the increased surface magnetic anisotropy for the CoFe films grown on top of a TI layer is believed to arise mainly from interfacial atomic intermixing.
