Scalable and hierarchically designed polymer film as a selective thermal emitter for high-performance all-day radiative cooling

Duo Li et al.

Summary: Traditional cooling systems consume a lot of energy and worsen the greenhouse effect. On the other hand, passive radiative cooling, which dissipates heat through an atmospheric transparency window to outer space without using any energy, has gained attention for its potential in reducing energy consumption and its impact on the environment.

Significant solar energy absorption of MXene Ti3C2Tx nanofluids via localized surface plasmon resonance

Debing Wang et al.

Summary: Efficiency is crucial in solar energy utilization, with direct absorption solar energy collectors (DASCs) being a promising solution. The study synthesized hyperstable Ti3C2Tx-H2O nanofluids as working fluids for DASCs and found that thin-layer Ti3C2Tx nanofluids showed higher conversion efficiency due to stronger localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect. Experimental and numerical results suggest that Ti3C2Tx-H2O nanofluids have great potential in solar energy harvesting.

Solar steam generation on scalable ultrathin thermoplasmonic TiN nanocavity arrays

Luca Mascaretti et al.

Summary: This study presents a scalable fabrication method for ultrathin plasmonic titanium nitride (TiN) nanocavity arrays, which exhibit 90% broadband solar light absorption within a sub-μm thickness. The TiN nanocavities show a fast non-linear increase in performance with increasing light intensity, reaching high evaporation rates and thermal efficiency under high solar irradiation conditions.

A 3D Plasmonic Antenna-Reactor for Nanoscale Thermal Hotspots and Gradients

Pratiksha D. Dongare et al.

Summary: A three-dimensional antennareactor geometry is demonstrated to induce large nanoscale thermal gradients, resulting in significant local temperature increases in the confined nanostructure reactor while minimizing temperature increase of the surrounding antenna. This strategy allows for high local temperature increases of nominally 200 degrees C achievable within antenna-reactors patterned into large extended arrays, which could have applications in small-volume, high-throughput chemical processes.

2D Ti3C2Tx MXenes: Visible Black but Infrared White Materials

Yang Li et al.

Summary: This study reports the intrinsically low mid-IR emissivity of 2D Ti3C2Tx MXene and demonstrates its potential in various areas. First-principles calculations reveal that the IR emissivity of MXene relies on both the nanoflake orientations and terminal groups, indicating great tunability. Additionally, more potential low-emissivity MXenes including Ti2CTx, Nb2CTx, and V2CTx are suggested.

Structural and optical properties of Pt-Al2O3 double cermet as selective solar absorber

M. G. Tsegay et al.

Summary: A new Pt-Al2O3 double cermet selective solar absorber configuration was prepared using magnetron sputtering system at room temperature. The coatings showed a high selective solar absorptance of 0.97 and a thermal emittance of 0.18 at 400 degrees C, which is better than almost all Al2O3 based selective solar absorbers reported so far. Optical analysis revealed that these properties arise from interference and light trapping/absorption effects in the multilayered columnar solar absorber coating. The Pt-Al2O3 cermet also exhibited an excellent photo-thermal conversion efficiency of 88%.
