Potential- and Time-Dependent Dynamic Nature of an Oxide-Derived PdIn Nanocatalyst during Electrochemical CO2 Reduction

Debabrata Bagchi et al.

Summary: This study reports a strategy to enhance the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (ECO2RR) by constructing an interface between a metal-based alloy nanoparticle and an oxide. The presence of the Pd-In-O interface is identified as a crucial parameter for enhancing eCO2RR toward CO. The study also finds that the duration of eCO2RR affects the product selectivity and successfully enhances the current density by optimizing process parameters.

Structure-Tailored Surface Oxide on Cu-Ga Intermetallics Enhances CO2 Reduction Selectivity to Methanol at Ultralow Potential

Debabrata Bagchi et al.

Summary: In this study, the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (eCO(2)RR) on two intermetallic compounds formed by copper and gallium metals (CuGa2 and Cu9Ga4) is investigated. The results show that CuGa2 exhibits high selective conversion of CO2 to methanol due to its unique 2D structure that retains surface and subsurface oxide species even in the reduction atmosphere. Various characterization techniques are employed to reveal the changes of Ga2O3 species and the mechanism of methanol formation. Additionally, a poly(tetrafluoroethylene)-based gas diffusion electrode is utilized to improve the overall eCO(2)RR performance.

Mechanistic insights into the promotional effect of Ni substitution in non-noble metal carbides for highly enhanced water splitting

Soumyabrata Roy et al.

Summary: The promotion effect of Ni substitution on the bifunctional overall water splitting activity of Ni-MoC/WC@NGC supported on N-doped graphitic carbon is elucidated. Ni substitution significantly improves the OWS performance, especially in the hydrogen evolution reaction. In acidic media, Ni-MoC@NGC exhibits lower onset overpotential and higher current density, enabling water splitting with the assistance of a commercial battery.

Tailoring Binding Abilities by Incorporating Oxophilic Transition Metals on 3D Nanostructured Ni Arrays for Accelerated Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Jaerim Kim et al.

Summary: Efficient Ni-based thin film catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction in alkaline water electrolysis were studied by incorporating oxophilic transition metal atoms, showing a volcano relation between OH-binding energies and alkaline HER activities. The Cr-incorporated Ni catalyst exhibited optimized binding energies and enhanced HER activity in alkaline media. Introducing 3D Ni nanohelix arrays further improved catalytic performance by providing abundant surface active sites and effective channels for charge transfer and mass transport.

Heteroatom-Doping of Non-Noble Metal-Based Catalysts for Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution: An Electronic Structure Tuning Strategy

Jing Wang et al.

Summary: Electrocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen production is hindered by slow reaction kinetics and high-cost catalysts. Developing low-cost non-noble metal-based catalysts, particularly through heteroatom-doping to tune electronic structures, is crucial. Establishing a correlation between localized electronic structures and catalytic properties is key for advancing low-cost catalyst development.

Germanium-regulated adsorption site preference on ruthenium electrocatalyst for efficient hydrogen evolution†

Meihong Fan et al.

Summary: A magnesiothermic reduction route was introduced to synthesize phase-pure germanides that are not easily available traditionally. The obtained ruthenium germanide (RuGe) was found to be an efficient non-Pt electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution, with intrinsic activity close to that of Pt. Both theoretical and experimental studies showed that the excellent performance is attributed to the change in hydrogen site preference induced by germanium, from hollow to efficient Ru top sites.
