Dichroic Calcite Reveals the Pathway from Additive Binding to Occlusion

David C. Green et al.

Summary: This study investigates the organization and structural properties of organic additives in calcite crystals by using optical properties of crystals grown in the presence of Congo red dye, analysis of surface adsorption, molecular simulations, and changes in crystal morphologies. The results show that under different growth rates, the orientation of dye molecules in the crystal varies, contributing to a better understanding of the thermodynamics involved in the occlusion process and potential for designing additives with specific material properties.

Incorporation of nanogels within calcite single crystals for the storage, protection and controlled release of active compounds

Ouassef Nahi et al.

Summary: A strategy of encapsulating protein nanogels within single crystals of calcite is presented to overcome the leakage and instability issues of current nanocarriers. The nanogels loaded with active compounds demonstrate stable storage and controlled release capabilities within the calcite host, making them resistant to harsh conditions like high temperature and pH. Comparisons with other systems show the superior encapsulation performance of the nanogel/calcite system for efficient storage, transport, and controlled release of active compounds.
