Heat-Mediated Optical Manipulation

Zhihan Chen et al.

Summary: Progress in optical manipulation has led to significant advancements in various fields. Heat-mediated optical manipulation techniques exploit tailored optothermo-matter interactions and mass transport dynamics to control matter of different compositions, shapes, and sizes. In addition to conventional trapping, these techniques enable distinctive manipulation modes using simple and low-power optics, such as optothermal pulling, nudging, and rotating.

Molding, patterning and driving liquids with light

Feng Lin et al.

Summary: Laser and sunlight can induce giant depressions and ruptures in optothermocapillary fluids, and new fluids can be created by mixing lamp oil with different dyes. These fluids can be patterned to different shapes and sizes using laser, and the manipulation of different droplets on their surface can be demonstrated as an efficient controlling method and platform for optofluidic operations.

Marangoni convection-driven laser fountains on free surfaces of liquids

Feng Lin et al.

Summary: The study highlights how laser-induced fountain phenomena can cause surface deformation of liquids, challenging traditional views of Marangoni convection. The dynamic competition between outgoing Marangoni convection and upward recirculation flow is shown to be responsible for the unique behavior of laser fountain.
